2008 Helmet Information

The new coach is in place and we are all excited to see what Jason Hall will bring to our storied program.  As we have mentioned before in our previous blogs we expected to see a change in the look of the Massillon Tiger Helmet for the 2008 season.

MassillonTigerHelmetProject.com has learned that a change is coming to the 2008 Massillon Tiger Helmet.  These changes are bound to excite the town and take our program back in time historically.  Gone is the "borrowed" leaping tiger of the Hamilton Tiger Cats as well as the black helmet shells.  Returning to the program will be white helmet shells and the historically popular flying tiger (see below). Stripe details have not been finalized, but we do have information that black face masks will remain.

(please note that the stripe detail has not been finalized. This image is the helmet from 1989 used only for reference of the new look)

We have also been told that the Paul Brown and Steve Studer decals will remain, but pride decals have not been decided upon.

We will continue to update you as more details come to us.

Go Tigers!

New coach usually means new digs

The process is in full swing and all but the search committee are on the outside looking in, patiently waiting for the announcement of the next Massillon Tiger head football coach.  Who will it be?  Many names have been bandied about and the papers have settled on Jason Hall to be the next coach.  Whomever the next coach may be, if history repeats itself then Massillon's helmet is destined for yet another change.

The helmet is the most recognizable piece of equipment used on the football field and it seems that over the last 30 years head coaches have used the helmet as their own personal stamp on the Massillon football program.  As coaches changed so did the helmet color and decals.

Let's take a look back over the last 30 years.

Mike Currence - 1976 - 1984 - When Mike arrived he changed the helmet decal from Obie in 1975 to a Black Tiger Paw in 1976. For most of his tenure he kept the Paw decal with slight variations. The Black Tiger paw has never again been used.

John Maronto 1985-1987 - John's stamp on the Massillon Tiger program is the fiercest looking logo Massillon has ever had.  Personally one of my favorites. This logo remains with minor variations throughout his tenure.

Lee Owens 1988-1991 Lee's stamp on the Massillon Tiger program is a change that reverts back to the original flying tiger logo used early in Massillon's history. This logo is used through Lee's stay in Massillon with slight variations to the facemask and stripe detail.

Jack Rose 1992-1997 - Jack does not make a change until 1993 when No logo is used on the helmets. Obie is re-introduced in 1994 and is used throughout Jack's stay in Massillon.

Rick Shepas -1998-2004 Rick reverts to the flying Tiger for his first year and then introduces Black helmets for the first time in Massillon's history. Not to stray to far from history he institutes Obie to both sides of the helmet and thus the Shepas era is born.

Tom Stacy 2005-2007 - Welcome the newest in Massillon logos, the Hamilton Tiger Cats rework. As far as i know this is the first time that we have used someone else logo as our own with variation. This logo remains for Tom's 3 year stay with slight variations to the stripe detail on the helmet.

2008 - Who is next?  What is the next look?  What do you want to see?
